Steel Drum Manufacturing Process

How Steel Drums Are Manufactured

Steel drum manufacturing combines precision metal forming, automated welding, quality inspections, and finishing processes to produce durable containers for industrial and hazardous material applications.

At North Coast Container (NCC), every drum follows a carefully controlled manufacturing process designed to deliver consistent quality, reliable performance, and dependable supply across North America.

Inside the Steel Drum Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process consists of three primary production stages:

  • Receiving & Decoiling
  • Pressing Blanks
  • Welding & Forming

Each stage plays an important role in producing a finished steel drum that meets customer specifications and applicable performance standards.

Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process

1. Receiving & Decoiling

Large steel coils arrive at the facility and are cut into flat sheets that will become the drum body, top, and bottom components.

2. Pressing Blanks (Top & Bottom)

Steel blanks are stamped into drum ends using precision dies.

During this stage:

  • Tops and bottoms are formed
  • UN identification markings are stamped
  • Curl profiles are created for body seaming
  • Flange openings are punched and formed
  • Optional internal lining may be applied depending on product requirements
3. Body Forming & Welding

Steel sheets are rolled into cylindrical shells and resistance welded to create the drum body.

Additional forming operations include:

  • Rolling body hoops
  • Creating top and bottom flanges
  • Mechanical testing
  • Installing heads on open head drums
4. Interior Lining (Optional)

When required, an internal lining is applied and cured in a high-temperature oven to help protect product compatibility.

5. Painting & Finishing

Completed drums move through the finishing process where they receive their exterior coating before final inspection and packaging.

6. Final Inspection & Shipping

Before shipment, drums undergo quality verification to ensure they meet manufacturing specifications prior to loading for delivery.

Quality Throughout Every Step

Every stage of manufacturing is designed to support consistent quality and dependable performance.

From precision forming and welding to mechanical testing and final inspection, each drum is produced using controlled manufacturing processes before being prepared for shipment.
